Description

Network Rail commissioned Allen Archaeology Limited (AAL) to undertake archaeological monitoring and recording at York Railway Station. During the 19th century the site was occupied by workshops and sheds and railway sidings. At the beginning of the 20th century the buildings were adapted for other uses. Fitting Shop buildings on the site were demolished in 1979, but many of the original buildings still survive. The watching brief comprised the monitoring of 12 geotechnical test pits. All the 12 monitored pits contained made ground, but pits 104, 108, 109, and 111 also exposed walls and surfaces related to the Victorian Fitting Shop.
