Description

The site lies within a known archaeological landscape where a number of archaeological investigations in the vicinity have revealed evidence for later prehistoric and Romano-British activity. A total of four archaeological evaluation trenches were located to investigate anomalies identified by a 2021 geophysical survey and to evaluate the parts of the site where the geophysics has suggested an absence of archaeological features. Following the discovery of a partially exposed archaeological cut feature of possible prehistoric date within one of the trenches, a variation to the agreed evaluation methodology was implemented. This involved extending the trench to fully expose the feature to assist in understanding its nature, date and significance. The extended evaluation revealed one small pit and a much larger pit that contained tipping deposits of heat affected stone and charcoal. Although undated these are suggested to be indicative of prehistoric activity. This area of the site would need to be the subject of further mitigation work to establish if any further associated discrete features survive and to allow for the possible retrieval of dating evidence.
