Description

The work was undertaken for WSP on behalf of City of York Council and included the monitoring of machine excavation of a drainage trench with three manholes and ten gullies. Hand excavation was conducted at the junction of Fawcett Street and Kent Street where human remains were present. The archaeological works revealed possible Romano-British features including ditches likely to be related to the Romano-British field system proposed by Ottaway (2011). The medieval and post-medieval cemetery of the church of All Saints Fishergate (MYO3482) was encountered, with Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Scandinavian remains overlain by the medieval burials. Three areas of late disorganized burial practice were encountered which is suggestive of mass burials of post-medieval date. A total of 83 individuals were exhumed during the works. The excavation of a 3.3m by 3.3m service shaft close to the junction of Fawcett Street and Kent Street also revealed the southern and southeastern limit of the medieval cemetery and the remains of a cobble surface around the edge of the churchyard. A post-medieval road was also investigated.
