Description
The mitigation comprised of the excavation of an area 10m by 10m centred on the potential undated pre-historic feature to investigate it further and identify any associated nearby features.
The mitigation results revealed the feature to be water extraction well of Bronze Age date. This included evidence for wood stake lining with an in-situ wood upright post together with opposing post holes located on its upper edge suggesting the possibility of a winching structure. A radiocarbon date of 1449 – 1291 BC at a probability of 93.8%; 1491 – 1481 BC at a probability of 1.6% was obtained from the in-situ wood upright post. A further two features where also reveal and interpreted as fire pits that contained heat affected stone inclusions that shared a similar characteristic of fills within the well.
