Description

An archaeological watching brief was carried out by On Site Archaeology Ltd during the construction of new garage foundations located to the rear of 20 & 21 Clifton Green, York. The watching brief revealed a truncated Roman ditch dated to the late 1st century probably associated with agricultural activities of that period. Also revealed during the investigation of the site were two phases of medieval activities. The first phase appears to be a line of possible cesspits dated to the late 13th century from which fragments of ceramic building material were recovered indicating the presence of brick constructed medieval buildings near to the site. The second phase of medieval activity was the construction of a probable property boundary ditch dated to the late 15th century. Both medieval phases probably relate to medieval tenement properties that fronted onto Clifton Green.
