Description

This report documents the archaeological recording of a small historic staircase (staircase 2) rising from ground to first floor at the rear (south-west) of no. 60 Goodramgate, York. The property comprises two principal structural elements, being a medieval and post medieval timber framed building to the north, and a brick building of c.1783 to the south. The whole property is listed Grade 1, as forming part of the significant adjacent Lady Row, built c.1316, although whether parts of the site relate to this row is contested and uncertain. Dendrochronological assessment was carried out in May 2025 to hopefully address this question, however sampling was unfortunately not possible. Following structural assessment, proposals were submitted to City of York Council to replace ‘staircase 2’ on a like-for-like basis, as part of a wider scheme of proposed conservation repairs and alterations. Listed Building Consent (24/01847/LBC) for these works was approved on 10/02/2025, with Condition 3 stating “Prior to the removal of ‘Staircase 2’ hereby permitted, as shown on drawing reference ‘YSW-19-03-100’, scaled plans to include a sectional drawing and annotated photographs shall be submitted to York Historic Environment Record (HER)”.
