Description

Archaeological monitoring took place during the excavation of the spine road, Park Street, box cut during February and March 2023. The linear road box cut was up to c.12m wide at the top and then c.7m wide at the base, with a batter on the sides, as required. The depth of excavation varied, depending on the ground conditions encountered as well as the final surface level of the road. This resulted in some areas being excavated to a depth of c.2m BGL, with others only c.1m BGL. A buried soil was identifed in these works. Towards the western end of the observed area, the former stream channel (a tributary for Holgate Beck) was also encountered. Further west of the stream channel, the former ground level began rise to the south. This meant that the buried soil deposits had previously been entirely removed during the railways’ landscaping works and construction of the Wagon Works in the 19th century. No archaeological deposits of signif icance were encountered.
