Full Description
Waterworks, now offices. Two builds of late C18, incorporating length of rebuilt city wall; mid C19 alterations. For the York Waterworks Co. MATERIALS: front of orange-brown brick in Flemish bond: ground floor at rear of magnesian limestone, first floor of red-brown brick in random bond. Two gabled dormers with squat 6-pane windows, one flat dormer with 4-pane window to pantile roof: rebuilt brick stack, gable coping and kneelers of brick. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attics; 5 irregular bays. Door in centre is of 6 sunk panels beneath radial fanlight. Left end originally had segmental carriageway, now blocked by 4-pane sash window. All windows are 4-pane sashes with painted stone sills and 1-course segmental brick arches. 3-course raised brick second floor band. Rear: 2 storeys and attic; scattered fenestration. Two glazed and panelled doors and one sunk-panel door with divided overlight. On first floor, oriel with 8- and 16-pane sashes at left end: elsewhere, 4-pane sashes, one rising into gabled dormer also with 4-pane sash. Other dormers are gabled and have 9-pane pivoting windows. Right return: gable end. Ground floor altered: first floor has 12-pane sash, attic squat 6-pane sash, both with segmental brick arches. INTERIOR: not inspected but RCHM record C18 staircase with close string and balusters with square knops: some original fittings, some mid C19 on first floor.
