Monument record MYO136 - Deserted Medieval Village?

Summary

Deserted Medieval village mentioned in Domesday and the 1301 tax return. Aerial photographs taken in 1951 revealed earthworks possibly associated with the settlement. Later photography shows these possible close boundaries to the north and east of Manor House Farm have been levelled and are visible as soilmarks. A hollow way, which partially survives as an earthwork, lies to the south of the complex of enclosures.

Full Description

NMR Information:

SE 698529. Deserted Medieval village of Scoreby. Listed. (1)

The now depopulated village of Scoreby occupied a riverside position
near Manor House Farm, (Scoreby Manor House) where indeterminate
earthworks were visible in 1974. Scoreby was mentioned in Domesday
1086 and there were 14 taxpayers in 1301. A manor house also
existed in 1368. Foundations and pottery were said to have been
frequently turned up here in the 19th century (a). (2-2a)

An area of indeterminate earthworks are visible at SE 699531. These
are probably associated with the deserted Medieval village of
Scoreby but no definite pattern can be ascertained. (3)

The area around Scoreby Manor House has been ploughed and only
slight traces of ridge and furrow are visible. No trace of any
buildings, steadings, etc, remain. At SE 699531 ploughing has
levelled the area and all that remains is about a hectare of ground
slightly stonier than the rest. (4)

Aerial photographs show a series of probable close boundaries as soilmarks at SE 699531. These are bounded on the south by levelled ridge and furrow cultivation. A hollow way, partly extant and partly showing as a soilmark, approaches the village from the south. (5)
