Monument record MYO1535 - Fulford Cross

Summary

Stone cross of circa 1485 which replaced a wooden cross of 1374-1375. It became a boundary marker in 1593. Octagonal cross shaft 1m high set into an octagonal base 0.75m high whigh itself is set on a tier of three stone steps all octagonal in shape and are 0.6m high in total. Scheduled and listed.

Full Description

Boundary cross. C15. Limestone. Octagonal on plan. Truncated broach stopped octagonal shaft approximately 0.6 metre high, on deep base raised on 3 steps. (An Inventory of the Historical Monuments of the City of York: RCHME: Outside the City Walls East of the Ouse: HMSO: 1975-: 54).

Historic England (pers comm. Insp. Mon. 2024):
The cross is in good condition and is to be considered in its original location. Believed to be erected c.1485 replacing earlier timber cross. Cross likley demarcates ownership boundary between the city and St Marys Abbey.

The cross was the meeting point for city officials to meet King Henry VIII in 1541 to visibly submit to his authority following the suppression of the Pilgrimage of Grace.

Fulford Cross, of wood in 1374/5, had been replaced by a stone cross by 1501, and became a boundary stone in 1593.

A well preserved and typically Md. stone cross comprising shaft, 0.9 m. in height, and socket stone mounted on a base of three tiers. See G.P. AO/63/108/2.
