Full Description

Terrace of 16 houses, with attached front garden railings and gates. First houses c1853; terrace extended at each end in later C19: some later alteration. By GT Andrews. MATERIALS:: pink-grey mottled brick, some in Flemish bond, some in Flemish garden wall variant, some in English garden wall bond; modillion eaves cornices of timber; continuous roof of slate, returned and hipped at each end, with scrolled corner brackets and brick stacks. Garden walls of brick with stone coping and cast-iron railings and gates. PLAN: end houses form returns at each end of terrace and have central-entry plan; No.1A has similar plan; remainder have entrance passage to left of front room. EXTERIOR: 2-storey fronts, earlier houses having cellars; 1 first floor window to each house, except Nos 1, 1A and 15 which have 3. Doorcases are of plain pilasters, with moulded imposts, and full entablature with dentilled cornice hoods, except that to No.15 which has no entablature. Front doors are either 4- or 6-panelled beneath plain overlights, except those to Nos 3, 8 and 15, which are altered or replacement. Windows are sashes, either 12- or 16-paned, except those to Nos 1, 3 and 15 which are C20 replacements; all have cambered heads and stone sills, and those on ground floor have flat arches of brick; some dressings are painted. INTERIORS: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: garden gates and railings are turned with foliate tips and standards turned with ball finials. Some railings have been lost and some walls rebuilt. The incomplete terrace is inaccurately illustrated in Whittock's 'Bird's-eye View of the City of York in the 1850s'.
