Full Description
Public rooms. c1860. Red brick in Flemish bond with white brick and stone dressings; timber guttering and brackets; slate roof. EXTERIOR: river front: basement and 2 storeys built above river wall; 6-bay front articulated by arcade of semicircular cogged brick arches on full height pilasters with moulded brick imposts. River wall incorporates tall round-arched passage opening. Basement openings are squat 2-light windows with transoms in round arches of white brick. On ground floor, windows are 4-pane sashes with segmental heads, on first floor 2-light round-headed casements with transoms. All have stone sills and sill bands over raised brick aprons, in raised surrounds extended beneath sills. Ground and first floor bands run across pilasters. Heavy modillion cornice on ornate paired brackets. Rear: 2 storeys 5 bays, articulated as on river side. At left of centre, stone steps lead to pilastered doorcase with moulded impost band beneath blocked fanlight and triple keyed segmental arch: double doors are of raised and fielded panelling. Other ground floor openings are boarded, one at right of centre having segment-headed overlight. On first floor, two bays at left are blind, three bays to right have round-headed windows as on river front, similarly detailed. INTERIOR: not inspected.
