Full Description

House. c1830-40. Yellow brick with painted stone dressings. Slate roof. Double-depth plan. EXTERIOR: symmetrical facade of 2 storeys and 3 bays, with the central bay projecting forwards under a pediment, deep modillioned timber eaves, and a moulded storey band which continues around the porch as a cornice. The windows are glazing bar sashes and have rubbed brick flat arches, except for the central window on the 1st floor which has a painted architrave. The painted single-storey porch projects forwards slightly and has 3 concentric recessed semicircular arches with a moulded impost band. The outer arch has an archivolt and keystone and the tympanum has a blind panel with segmental top. The door has 4 panels. The verges overhang at the eaves and there are chimneys on both gables, in front of and behind the ridge. To the right there is a single-storey one-bay wing with a glazing bar sash. The rear elevation is of 3 bays with a central doorway. The ground-floor windows are tripartite glazing bar sashes with canvas blinds. The 1st floor windows are glazing bar sashes with louvred shutters, sliding horizontally below a timber valance. INTERIOR: the stair hall is in the centre of the front of the building, with the outside door beneath the half-landing of the staircase. This has an open string, turned balusters, and a mahogany handrail. The rear hall is entered through 2 semicircular arches. The 2 rear ground-floor rooms have window shutters, and marble fireplaces with iron grates. The fireplace in the north-west room is now painted. Both rooms have foliated ceiling centrepieces of painted plaster and iron, intended for gas lamps and connected to ventilation ducts. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: the garden front wall is of brick with stone and concrete copings and carries iron railings with bulb finials and standards with acorn finials. The wall returns on the right-hand side, where it adjoins the house. Near the right of the front wall there is an iron gate with turned gateposts which have acorn finials. The short left-hand return wall has a similar gate and piers, and terminates against a brick pier which is attached to a stone pier with moulded cap.
