Full Description

House. 1865. Brick with stone and artificial stone dressings. Slate roof. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys above a basement. 3 bays. The 1st and 2nd floor windows are glazing bar sashes with exposed sash boxes, and a 1st floor sill band. The rusticated lintels have individually-sculpted heads as keystones. To each side of the doorway, in the right-hand bay of the ground floor, there are much narrower lintels with similar heads, the right-hand one to a tall narrow sashed window and the left-hand one to a blind recess. On the ground floor there is a canted bay window on a brick base, with sashes without glazing bars, timber rusticated lintels, a modillion cornice, and a leaded roof. At basement level the canted bay has rubbed brick flat arches and glazing bar sashes. To the right of the steps to the main entrance there is a narrow cellar window. To the left of the steps there is a cellar doorway with a door of 4 panels and a shallow overlight in 3 panes. The main doorway has brick pilasters with roll-moulded corners and stone caps and bases, supporting a semicircular arch with sculpted keystone and an archivolt which includes polychrome tiles. The recessed door has 6 raised and fielded panels. Above there is a plain semicircular overlight. To the left and right of the facade pilaster strips rise from the 1st floor sill band to corbelled kneelers which are carved with lions' heads. Timber modillion gutter cornice. Shared chimneys to left and right. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: the attached railings have spear-head finials and are set on low brick walls with stone copings. The gate is also of iron, with iron gateposts which have ball finials. Nos 1-22 Bootham Terrace form an unusually complete row of speculatively built terraced houses, constructed between 1860 and 1870 to an interesting variety of different designs.
