Full Description
Two houses. 1865. Red brick with some painted stone or stucco dressings. Slate roof. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys plus attics and basements. Each house of 2 bays, with a canted bay window of 2 storeys above a basement to the left. The bay windows are sashed without glazing bars and project forwards from brick panels. Above the ground floor they have shallow dentilled cornices, and above the 1st floor they have dentilled gutter cornices. The cellar windows are glazing bar sashes with painted lintels. The right-hand windows on the 1st floor are sashed without glazing bars and have rubbed brick flat arches. All the 1st floor windows to No.14 have external blind boxes. The 2nd floor windows are sashed with rubbed brick flat arches. Both houses have 2 gabled dormers and have doorways in their right-hand bays. The doorcases have pilasters with sunken panels, tall brackets, frieze blocks, dentilled cornices, and panelled reveals. The doors each have 5 panels with raised mouldings: the 2 upper ones octagonal, the middle 2 rounded rectangles, and the lower one with re-entrant corners. The overlights have segmental tops. Modillion gutter cornice. Chimneys to left and right of each house. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: the attached railings have pointed finials and are set on low brick walls with stone copings. The gates are also of iron, with iron gateposts which have ball finials. Nos 1-22 Bootham Terrace form an unusually complete row of speculatively built terraced houses, constructed between 1860 and 1870 to an interesting variety of different designs.
