Bishopgate House (1 Bishopgate Street) was historically part of a larger house known as Cherry Hill House that was built by the Richardson family in c.1780 who owned and built an adjacent industrial works. The standing fabric today largely dates from the rebuilding of what was in effect the north range of Cherry Hill House in c.1860. It has then been altered during the 20th century as the original domestic use changed to office uses associated with the industrial works to the rear. In the 1940s older parts of Cherry Hill House were demolished as was a later (Victorian) rear extension to Bishopgate House and the works were expanded to occupy the location of this house and its garden. What is now Bishopgate House acquired its current footprint from this date. By the early 1980s the works had ceased operation and were subsequently demolished and replaced with the modern housing estate at the rear of Bishopgate House (Heritage Statement 2021).
