Find Spot record MYO2018 - Neolithic-Bronze Age Hoard

Summary

Hoard of at least 43 implements were found in a compact group deep in the gravel terrace near the junction of Holgate Beck an the Ouse. The regular sharp flakes and blades and unused appearance of the finished blades suggest a "merchant's hoard", whilst the inclusion of a barb and tang arrowhead could imply a late Neolithic early Bronze Age context. The hoard consists of at least seven axes (one is polished greenstone, six are of polished flint), three flint arrowheads, nine ovoid flint spearheads, three flint scrapers, and eleven flint blades and flakes, and two worked flint points. The find was made in 1868 on site of NE Railway Gasworks. RCHME York vol 3 cites grid reference as SE582527, but this is Acomb Landing waterworks. The NE Gasworks site is SE584522, and this is used as the location on the HBSMR map.
