Full Description
Probable area of pottery and tile production, evidenced by clay pit, kiln firing waste, kiln furniture, wasters and tile 'stacks'. There is as yet no actual evidence for the precise location of kilns associated with this pottery and tile production area.
NMR:
The damaged remains of a probable Roman kiln were
found "immediately outside the east angle of the Roman fortress
and north of St Cuthbert's churchyard". (St Cuthbert's Church:
SE 60775204) The kiln was built of Roman tiles and 1st/2nd
century pottery was present. The kiln produced pottery in an
orange fabric which was not typically Roman. (1)
Pottery dated Flavio/Trajanic to ?Hadrianic. (2)
