Monument record MYO2197 - Site of barbican at Micklegate Bar

Summary

Barbican constructed in the 14th century. Part of a side wall of the barbican collapsed in April 1810 and it was proposed to demolish the whole. It was not completely removed until September 1826. Sir Walter Scott reputedly said he would gladly walk from Edinburgh to York if this would save the barbican.
