Full Description
A system of Medieval ridge and furrow cultivation was seen as earthworks and cropmarks on air photographs in the parish of Askham Richard. The field system is mainly contained in the southern two thirds of the parish, this could be because the estate of Askham Grange (se SE 54 NW 15) extends across the northern section of the parish. The ridge and furrow has mostly been plough-levelled but there is still a certain amount that was still extant in the 1980s around the modern village.
There is a large area of ridge and furrow just to the south of the village of Askham Richard which does not appear to respect the modern civil parish boundary and so falls into both the parishes of Bilbrough and Askham Richard.
