Monument record MYO3545 - Field System Wheldrake

Summary

Aerial photographs record an earthwork embankment cross on Wheldrake Ings. The date and purpose are uncertain. The feature probably represents a group of pillow mounds, perhaps of medieval date and associated with the nearby Carmelite foundation of Thicket Priory. The mounds occupy a ridge of higher ground in a triangular area of marginal land prone to flooding which is delimited by the old course of the River Derwent.
