Monument record MYO3878 - Field at Thorntree Hill, Thorntree Hill, Dunnington, York

Summary

The deposits recorded on this site were the ploughed out remains of road metalling, and the cuts and fills of ditches on each side of the road. Additionally there was a surface spread of ploughed soil. The road, of Roman date, appeared to link York, to the west to Stamford Bridge, to the east. Well preserved environmental deposits within the ditch fills suggest that settlement was in close association with the road, but no evidence for this was encountered within the excavated area. 23/03/2026 Location amended from SE65805216 to SE66075247 on the basis of a 1996 YAT field report and supporting visual evidence that demonstrates the actual route of the pipeline that enable the original discovery. YAT 1996.15, pp17-20. HER ref SYO2213
