Building record MYO3901 - 8 Gillygate

Summary

The 19th century buildings on Gillygate contribute to the attractive historic street scene and demonstrate a wider variety of styles than those of the 18th century. Some have attractive shop fronts such as the art nouveau No. 8. Shopfront to ground floor, bay window to first floor and sash window to third. Tiled floor in doorway. Described as Building of Merit in the Historic Core Conservation Area Appraisal. No 10 next door is a very similar property with a modified/plainer shopfront. Surveyed January 2015: Shor front: Ground floor shop frontage window has original stained glass at the top. Distinctive curled shape. Plain glass wooden door painted green. First floor front bay window is damaged at the bottom (sill); rotting wood and paint missing. However, two sides of bay also appear to have original stained glass in place. Properties to rear of 8 Gillygate leading to Bar Walls; two single level outbuildings. Shopfronts and upper floors also surveyed in November 2012. See linked document for detailed notes and photographs.
