'Houses: Monkgate', in An Inventory of the Historical Monuments in City of York, Volume 4, Outside the City Walls East of the Ouse (London, 1975), pp.91.

The building that forms the Brigadier Gerrard is a later addition to 84 Monkgate. When the land to the west of Monkgate formed part of the gas works, 84 Monkgate was used as the Gas Works Social Club. The building was extended and altered in the late 1970s-early 1980s. This is shown in photographs taken during demolition and clearence of buildings at the junction of Foss Bank and Monkgate in 1975. The addition to 84 Monkgate can also be seen through cartographic sources.
