Building record MYO3972 - 1 & 3 Barker Lane

Summary

Identified as Buildings of Merit in the Historic Core Conservation Area Appraisal. 1 Toft Green appears to have been previously associated with 86 Micklegate (Grade II*) and was presumably its coach house and stabling. The ownerships of 86 Micklegate and 1 Toft Green appear to have separated sometime after 1921. Presumably 1 Toft Green was built at about the same time as 86 Micklegate (c1724) and it appears to have gone through significant change and alterations during its lifetime. Externally there are hints at a former coach house and stabling with tall window openings at first floor front and rear presumably being used for hay and fodder. Internally however, there is no evidence for this use and the ground and first floor storage spaces are effectively gutted and fitted with mid-late 20th century staircases, fireplaces etc Much of the change, both internally and externally, is likely to be the result of the use by the railway company as goods offices. The major element of this appears to be the sliding doors and the two large, ground floor openings on the Toft Green elevation. The doors are articulated and suspended from a track at the top of the openings. It is acknowledged that these contribute a large part of the character of the building.
