Monument record MYO4169 - Site of Royal House
Summary
Several sources suggest that a Royal House ('domus regi') was constructed by the first Norman Kings on the west bank of the Ouse to be used by Royal visitors. Its suggetsed location is to the west of Tanner Row within the former Roman Colonia. It had a chapel dedicated to Mary Magedelane and was used for meetings of the county court. It was one of the most important royal houses in England, in the early 1130s the hereditary custodian of the house was granted a fee of 5d per day, just 2d less than the keeper of the palace at Westminster.
