Monument record MYO4171 - Possible site of Roman bridge across Ouse

Summary

Alleged site of Roman bridge; stonework found in 1893, but no traces of bridge abutments found by modern divers. On line of MYO2033, Roman Road 10 approaching York from the south-west from Tadcaster, Calcaria. Shown on the 1937 Ordnance Survey Plan.

NMR information:

[SE 6007 5185] Roman Bridge [G.S.] (Probable Site of) [T.I.] (1)

"Masses of the strongest stone-work" opposite Guildhall (a).
This stonework probably part of the south western abutment of a bridge connecting fortress and colonia. A frogman search for relics in the river bed was unsuccessful. (2)
