Monument record MYO4180 - Murton Village
Summary
Typically for such a small village, historical sources are limited. It is probable that, in common with most settlements in the Vale of York, it originated in the Saxon and Viking periods. What is certain is that the first recorded mention of Murton
is to be found in the DOMESDAY BOOK compiled by direction of King William I in 1086, where Murton is described as follows:
“In Mortun likewise the Canons have 4 carucates of land where 2 ploughs can be. Waste.”
