This memorial cottage home is one of the examples of 2nd Anglo Boer War cottage homes in Colonel Sir James Gildea's 1911 book 'For Remembrance and In Honour of Those Who Lost Their Lives in the South African War 1899-1902' printed by Eyre and Spottiswoode Ltd. (FYI, Sir James Gildea founded the Soldiers' and Sailors' Families Association, now SSAFA.)
The Beverley Independent 20th August 1904 provides a long list of all of subscriptions that had been raised at that time for the construction of these memorial cottage homes.
The Yorkshire Evening Press of 8th June 1905, reported on the opening of the cottage homes. It included the following description of the cottage homes - “…its bright exterior, together with the memorial tablet in front and a trim little garden, will earn it even more than a cursory glance from the passing traveller…… There is ample accommodation for a married couple and two single men as inmates. There is a good kitchen, living room, three bedrooms, and a bath-room, and the usual out-houses. In front of the cottage is a large enamelled brick tablet, on which are the names of the officers and men of the regiment who were killed in action, drowned, or died in the late war, besides an inscription at the top stating what the cottage is for, while at the foot of the list of names it reads..."
