This facility was opened in December 1973 and closed in September 1991. All surface features have been cleared away and a bungalow (141 Broadway) built on the site.

Full Description

The bunker beneath the ROC station has been retained with access through a hinged carpeted hatch in the middle of the hall. The internal ladder has been removed and there is a small aluminium ladder in its place. The post now has an electric supply and is used for storage including a wine rack. All the furniture has been removed but some of the original features have been retained including the WB1401 carrier receiver and WB1410 filter unit, the original light, cluster maps and some papers. Bunker located underneath 141 Broadway at the North side of the junction of Broadway and Heslington Lane. NGR SE61784980.

NMR Information

A Royal Observer Corps underground monitoring post built during 1973 to replace an earlier post destroyed by the A64 York ring road. The post remained operational until the `stand-down' of the UK Warning and Monitoring Organisation (UKWMO) in September 1991.

Full description
SE 6169 4982. Underground Monitoring Post. Its access hatch stands 0.9m above the ground level and is flanked by an outlet air vent, which is surmounted by a steel mushroom Ground Zero Indicato (GZI)
mounting plate. A hinged steel plate covers the access shaft which is 0.68m wide and 4.26m deep, a steel ladder is fitted to the wall of the shaft. The underground post consists of a 6.1m x 2.9m x 2.9m
rectangular reinforced concrete chamber with 0.3m thick floor, walls and roof. It is subdivided into he access shaft, a toilet/store, and the post-room. A ventilator in the end wall of the post rises
to the air vent, which stands 0.81m above ground level, equipped with fallout baffle lourves. Situated between the access hatch and the air vent, two pipes rise up through the ground: a 19mm diameter Bomb Power Indicator (BPI) pipe and a 102mm diameter flanged galvanised steel Fixed Survey meter (FSM) probe tube.
