Full Description
Phase 3- Dumping Activity (early-mid 11th century).
Evidence for a number of dump deposits may have formed a bank or platform on the eastern side of the excavation area. Discovery of a fragment of iron horseshoe, presence of burnt bone deposits as well as fragments of copper alloy and fired clay, a socketed bone point and fragment of rotary quern made of local stone. Stake holes identified but thought to be posts to support the platform or bank. A linear ditch or gully appears to have been excavated along the western (internal) face of the platform or bank (this may extend to the north seen in the later slump hollow or gully). Ditch or gully was later backfilled. Possibly related to the construction of a building platform or a low bank for some unknown purpose or to a much higher defensive bank which was levelled in the late 11th or early 12th century.
