NMR Information
SE 6042 5168, excavations at 16-22 Coppergate in 1976 revealed 4 tenements of mid 11th century date stretching back to the River Foss. The buildings were of blank walls on sill beams. There was evidence of waste from lathe turned wooden bowls. There were a number of finds of Scandinavian character. (1)
The Coppergate excavations found wattle or wooden buildings, structures, fences, pits (including cess pits) mainly dating from the 10th century onwards. The anaerobic conditions enabled good preservation of the timber and wattle. The construction techniques of the buildings varied, some included wood lined "basements" or cellars. Many were insubstantial single-storey buildings. There was also evidence for wood and bone working. (2)
Three fragments of grave slabs of 10th century date,a dn several pieces from a cross of late 8th-early 9th century date were also discovered. (3)
