Full Description

Structures, boundary divisions, pits and post-hole alignments survived in between areas of destruction from the construction of St Andrew's Priory (MYO 3633). Anglian coins, production waste and a range of non-local pottery, including continental wares were located. This evidence may suggest that this is the site of York's commercial wic.

Three successive phases of activity were encountered. The first phases of settlement was the most extensive. Traces of three or possibly five timber halls (surviving as post holes) were identified. Evidence obtained from the fill of pits showed a range of crafts and industries carried out on site.

The evidence does raise some questions - coins suggest a span of 150 years of activity on the site. However, the physical evidence suggests insubstantial nature of buildings and a small amount of craft debris and pottery does not support the case for longevity or intense activity (Ailsa Mainman Anglian York 2019).
