Monument record MYO5255 - Railway Boundary Stone

Summary

The stone is set in the wall of the old railway workshop fronting onto Lowther Terrace in the outer wall of the former joiners shop of the York and North Midland Railways and later North Eastern Railways Queen Street Works. It is possibly the only remaining Y and NM Railway boundary stone which dates between 1839-1854. Latterly the building was British Rails Road Motors garage and more recently a car hire facility. There has been serious deterioration of the stone over several years due to water and freeze/ thaw caused by a damaged gutter above the stone. Pers Comm. Nick Beilby York Civic Trust
