Full Description

Magnolia Cottage and the former chapel are located immediately to the south of The
Chantry (MYO1984), which is a substantial 18th century detached, two-storey house with a large 19th
century extension. There is a substantial garden that extends to the River Ouse forming the east boundary of the property.

Magnolia Cottage consists of a rectangular former coach house with three extensions on the
east side. The whole of the building, including the extensions, is constructed from heavily
painted brick (probably of the same type and appearance to the unpainted chimney stacks
and other unpainted brick walls and buildings nearby) of various bonds. The roof is plain
Welsh slate with a tile ridge, plain eaves and projecting verges and all the fenestration is
timber of various dates. The doors are all timber and are similarly a mixture of types and
dates. The rainwater goods are wholly plastic.

The building was altered in 2016 and most of the internal layout appears to date to that phase.

The former chapel, now office is a small single-storey structure situated between Magnolia
Cottage and The Chantry. It is wholly constructed from thickly painted brick laid in English garden wall bond 5:1 and both the north-west and south-west corners are rounded with chamfers. The chapel is physically joined to The Chantry via a former passage way that was roofed over in the 21st century. The entire roof structure, rainwater goods and fascias are modern.

The Chantry has its origins in the 18th century and was greatly extended to the south in the
19th century. The buildings to the south, including Magnolia Cottage and the chapel were
added later in several phases commencing with the former coach house and other structures
since demolished. The first phase dates to at least 1851.
