Full Description

Ditches on a NW-SE alignment excavated in 1998 and 2022. Ditches represent activity relating to agricultural land management during the late 1st and 2nd century. Ditches in this area generally respect the alignment of Road 10.

Similar features are known from other sites in the city and have been interpreted as land divisions and drainage.

During the 2022 excavations at Abbeyfields House a rare Roman cask-lined well was discovered. Very few examples are known from York. It would have provided water for the the farmland but also possibly for the settlement closer to Road 10 (Tadcaster Rd).
