Full Description
Former industrial building, previuosly known as the Mess Room, currently in use as National Railway Museum offices known now as The Sidings. Recorded in 2023 ahead of demolition as part of National Railway Museum expansion. The Mess Room was built in 1889-1900 for use of the goods workers. It is not listed but it adjoins the Grade II listed Bullnose Building or Coal Manager’s Office.
The former Mess Room is a single storey Flemish bond red brick five-bay building with a pitched slate roof with red brick chimney stacks at each end of the gable sides. Only the south and north elevations were recorded as the east elevation butted up to the Coal Managers Office building and the west gable end was constructed against by the late 20th century main entrance lean-to Station Hall.
The former Mess Room building interior was modernised with late 20th century fittings and furnishing that included room partitioning with false ceilings, plastered walls and carpeting throughout.
