Full Description

This is an Art Deco house thought to have been built in 1934, originally with a square footprint. The house was built and owned by Captain Thomas Smallwood Riley, a transport contractor to the military. It was reportedly based on plans obtained at the Ideal Home exhibition around 1930, although no evidence has been provided for this attribution. Images thought to date from 1937 show the house rendered with a stepped parapet to the flat roof, metal strip windows, recessed entrance, small front balcony with railing, and curved sliding garage doors on the corner to the right of the entrance. It had small, plain wooden gateposts and gate.
In the 1950s a two-storey garage annexe was added to the west, connected to the house by walls at front and rear. By 1967 the house had also been extended to the front, with modern glazing to this and the entrance, and with a glazed conservatory to the rear. The garage frontage has also been replaced with a curved wall with strip glazing, and modern gates and gatepiers added in Art Deco style. The interior retains some plain panelling and neo-Georgian plasterwork and fireplace, and much of its cellular plan form.

The building was assessed by Historic England for listing in 2024 and turned down.
