Full Description

Tang Hall School opened in 1928 in the form of a H plan, with single storey wings and had a formal institutional feel. The building’s core and extensions are of a neo-Georgian architectural style, with Art Deco detailing, typical of the period, and constructed in red brick with sandstone detailing with hipped roofs. The building is contemporary with the surrounding Tang Hall Estate, which is reflected within its architectural style. The building once possessed colonnaded porticos along its central and south facing elevations, however, during Phase 2, these were enclosed by brickwork and converted into internal corridors with lean-to roofs, double glazed windows and fire exits. It is unclear when this change occurred, however, a photo from the Second World War depicts the building pre-change.

The school building has remained relatively unaltered, the most noticeable changes being the infilling of the original colonnaded porticos in order to create internal corridors sometime in the late 20th century, and the addition of a kitchen extension to the southwestern wing’s northern elevation in c.1997 and finally a central office wing was built between December 2005 and May 2007. In addition to alterations to form, the interiors of most of the building’s rooms have been modernised and standardised, including the insertion of suspended ceilings, screening the original ceiling.

The main school building was recorded (Level 2) in 2022 ahead of propsals for redevelopment of the school. Ancillary buildings were not recorded as they are to be retained as part of the proposed scheme.
