Full Description

Statue of Queen Victoria. Dated 1901. Sculptor GW Milburn of York. White marble on red sandstone base. Figure life-size, seated, with sceptre, orb and crown. Nose now missing. Base of rectangular plan, concave-sided on elevation. Front inscribed: 'ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION... QUEEN VICTORIA... BORN 1819. ASCENDED THE THRONE 1837. DIED 1901.' The left-hand side has a panel carved with a shield of arms of the City of York. (Murray H: Heraldry and the Buildings of York: York: 1985-: 11).
