Full Description
Formerly known as: Nos.1 AND 2 SHAMBLES. House, now shop and offices. C14, C17 and early C18: later extension and mid C19 shopfront. Painted brick in Flemish bond with timber shopfront and eaves cornice; hipped pantile roof with brick stack.
EXTERIOR: 3-storey 2-window front to The Shambles, 1-window to King's Square. Shambles front: central door disused: shop now entered from King's Square: both doors are part glazed over raised and fielded panels, with decorative overlights. Shop windows on both fronts are small-pane canted bays with moulded cornices. At right end of The Shambles front, 3-panel door with divided overlight gives access to former through passage. First and second floor windows on both fronts are 12-pane sashes with painted flat arches of brick, one blocked on second floor of Shambles front. Raised bands to both upper floors. Moulded modillion cornice, with fluted inverted bell rainwater head on The Shambles front.
INTERIOR: ground floor front room retains moulded dentilled cornice. Some framing and floor joists from earlier building visible in rear room. On first floor, room to left is lined with re-used moulded square panelling beneath moulded cornice. Reeded fire surround with plain shelf and geometric overmantel panel, flanked by fluted and enriched Ionic pilasters. Both window surrounds flanked by similar pilasters.
