Title MICKLEGATE BAR, YORK INTERNAL STAIRCASES REPORT
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2009
City of York Interference Index 979

Abstract/Summary

On 25th November 2009 an inspection was made of the two internal wooden staircases and adjacent timber fabric within Micklegate Bar, York. These observations indicate that the staircases are of relatively recent date. Whilst it is possible that the joists through which the staircases rise are of the earlier 19th century date, it is more likely that they are of more recent origin. The only timber in close proximity to the staircases that is of any real antiquity is the joist to the north-east side of the upper staircase, which may itself be re-used from elsewhere. The floorboards to the second floor are of 19th or 20th century date whilst those to the third floor relate to the latter half of the 20th century.
