Source/Archive record SYO1471 - Newgate Market York

Title Newgate Market York
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2014

Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief was carried out between the 6th and 10th of January 2014 on behalf of the City of York Council. Five trial holes were monitored to allow ground compaction tests to be carried out. The trial holes were within the boundary of Newgate Market, York. The majority of the deposits and structures observed are post medieval in nature associated with the use of the area as tenement housing that was demolished in 1955 to allow Newgate market to be constructed. The earliest archaeology encountered was in Trial Hole 5, a potentially late medieval wall and construction related deposit.
