Title NEW LANE, HUNTINGTON, YORK Report on geophysical survey conducted in March–April 2014
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2014

Abstract/Summary

Trent & Peak Archaeology as part of York Archaeological Trust were commissioned by Barratt/David Wilson Homes and Persimmon homes to conduct a geophysical survey at the site of a proposed housing development adjacent to New Lane, on the outskirts of Huntington, York, centered on NGR SE 6200 5552 (Fig 1). The site is fairly level and lies at a height of c.14m OD. Geophysical survey demonstrated the presence of potential buried archaeological features. These comprised: • Possible field systems or land divisions in Area 1. • Probable settlement activity or structures in Area 2. • Possible field systems or land divisions in Area 3. • Possible pitting and pit alignments in Areas 4 & 6. The uneven distribution of geophysical anomalies across the areas surveyed shouldprobably be seen as a result of the changing geological background and not necessarily representative of a scarcity of archaeological features in those areas where geophysical anomalies were fewer. The work was carried out between the 24th March and 4th April 2014 following the methodology detailed in the WSI (February 2014) approved by John Oxley (City Archaeologist for City of York Council), in accordance with standard, accepted practices for archaeological geophysical surveys (EH 2008).
