Title Whinthorpe Geophysical Survey
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2014

Abstract/Summary

Survey areas were dictated by crop cycles. A total of 113 hectares was available for survey between April and May 2014 and was carried out by survey teams from Archaeological Services WYAS and GSB Prospection Ltd. The results of the survey were limited. One area of high archaeological potential was defined in the northwestern corner of the site, where a complex of enclosures and field systems was identified. The remainder of the area produced limited results, in the form of areas of possible ridge and furrow, former field boundaries and drainage features. The negative result across much of the site has been assessed with caution, based on the results of investigations to the north which found that the depth and character of archaeological features, the depth of overburden and the background magnetic ‘noise’ mean that magnetometry is not always successful in identifying features of archaeological significance. Further evaluation would be required to test these negative results and achieve greater understanding of the archaeological potential of the site.
