Abstract/Summary
This report has been undertaken by MAP Archaeological Practice Ltd. under
instruction from Andrew Bowes, acting on behalf of Linden Homes (North) Ltd
and Miller Homes, to evaluate the surviving sub-surface archaeology on Land
North of Stockton Lane, York.
The area was four fields used for hay pasture and one field of overgrown
scrub. Three of the fields contained ponds.
An Archaeological Geophysical Survey was undertaken in December 2014 by
Phase Site Investigations Ltd. and no anomalies of archaeological potential
were identified. After consultation with John Oxley, the City of York Council’s
Planning Archaeologist, Trial trenching was undertaken in accordance with an
agreed Written Scheme of Investigation.
The site was 5.9 hectares in size and 1700m2 of trenching was conducted.
Seventeen Evaluation Trenches were excavated and all were 50m by 2m in
size.
Three trenches contained signs of modern activity, including a drain seen in
Trenches 7 & 9 and a posthole in Trench 8.
No further archaeological work is necessary in respect of this site.
