Abstract/Summary
This document reports on an archaeological evaluation investigation, carried out at Bleachfield, University of York,
Heslington, by Field Archaeology Specialists (FAS) Ltd, on behalf of the University of York. The investigation
involved the monitoring of groundworks associated with the construction of new accommodation blocks, and
the excavation of seven evaluation trenches across the site.
The investigation revealed a consistent sequence across the site. Subsoil, following the natural north-south
sloping gradient of the site, was found to underlie a relict ploughsoil of medieval or later date, sealed by more
modern ground surfaces and structures associated with the recently demolished Bleachfield housing.
