Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief was carried out over the course of two days on machine excavation associated with the conversion of a barn at 49 The Village, Osbaldwick. The work was commissioned by BMB Joinery and Building Services to satisfy a planning condition. The programme of work was completed largely without disturbance of archaeological features or deposits. This was particularly the case with exterior works associated with service trenching and creating an extension to the north-east. The exception was within the interior of the barn where work exposed a small segment of wall or culvert constructed of red brick and lying on a slightly different alignment to the current barn. Two worked sandstone pad-stones were also recovered from where they were reused in the barn foundations. These elements, though undated, may be of medieval origin.
