Abstract/Summary
On the 21st June 2017 a watching brief took place during the excavations for a foundation slab, linked with a single storey rear extension, in the rear yard of 61 Monkgate, York.
No archaeology of significance was encountered during these works, with all of the development area for the ground floor extension having been disturbed during the modern era.
Investigation of the map sequence indicates that there have been repeated, significant, changes to the immediate rear of the property since 1852. The lower patio area, up to the limits of the extension underway, has previously been enclosed within a building. The current works and slab foundation will not impinge on potential archaeological deposits any further than the previous activity.
The detached garden building is an option which may be completed at a later stage (As of 22nd June 2017). This does require the observation of excavations for the footings as there is potential for the no modern disturbance. It is also abutting an unusual, potentially early, stone built element of the boundary wall.
