Title 5 St Aubyn Place
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2017

Abstract/Summary

From the 2nd to the 15 August 2017 a watching brief took place at 5 St Aubyn Place, York, as a result of a condition from the planning authority. The works involved the demolition of two existing side garages and the excavation of foundations for a rear extension to the south-west, and a side extension to the north-east of the dwelling. No archaeology of significance was encountered during these works as only deposits connected to the construction of the garages or related to the garden were identified. The depth of the foundations for the north-east extension did not entail any significant impact on modern or archaeological deposits. The excavation of the south-east extension and the service trench confirmed that garden or agricultural soil is present to a considerable depth. This reflects similar watching briefs and excavations in the area, and also supports the agricultural history of the landscape.
